The Canoe Museum stewards the world’s largest and most significant collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercraft.

About us

The Canadian Canoe Museum is a unique national heritage centre that explores the canoe’s enduring significance to the peoples of Canada, Turtle Island and the World, through an exceptional collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercraft. We’re an engaging, family-friendly museum with more than 100 canoes and kayaks on display. Visitors will enjoy interactive, hands-on galleries, a scavenger hunt, model canoe building and puppet theatre for children. Through inclusive, memorable and engaging exhibits and programs we share the art, culture, heritage and spirit of paddled watercraft with our communities. We are building a new museum at the water's edge in Peterborough to ensure that a fundamental part of Canadian heritage is not lost.

  • Today marks a significant moment in our organization's history and the history of our country. After a long journey to the water's edge, today we are celebrating the Grand Opening of our new museum and lakefront campus! Please join us in celebrating this momentous occasion by tuning into the live stream of the Official Opening Ceremonies at 1:00 P.M ET. The ceremony is also being recorded and will be available to watch on our YouTube channel afterwards. https://lnkd.in/eWvXgzqN The Canadian Canoe Museum collection is unlike any other and has been recognized for its national significance to Canada. Now, it finally has a befitting, purpose-built home that enables it to be displayed in its entirety and meaningfully cared for as a fundamental part of Canada’s past. This significant cultural, educational, and historical museum honours the Indigenous origins of the jiimaan (canoe) and qajaq (kayak). Engaging exhibits and programs allow us to share the rich diversity of histories and stories of the canoe, fostering deeper understanding and inspiring future generations. We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from our local community, individuals across Canada, government partners, foundations and financial institutions. To our staff, volunteers, and board of directors, we extend our gratitude for their sustained perseverance and support; we could not have completed this extraordinary journey without you. We look forward to welcoming the world through our doors when we open to the public on Monday, May 13th with our full visitor experience! Thank you for your continued support! #NewMuseum #WatersEdge #BestOfTheWorld

It’s a special feeling to see the new museum begin to match what we used to dream of. Inside the building, the Atrium is coming together with drywall being finished and painted, wood ceiling and wall treatments being installed, and light fixtures being hung. The Gathering Room, which will host events, educational experiences, and other functions, is well underway along with the Upper Terrace, which connects the space to the outdoors. The first canoes, kayaks, and other exhibition materials have been hung in the Exhibition Hall! The Collection Hall move-in has reached 300 watercraft with around 200 left to be moved. Work continues in the Living Traditions Centre, which will house the Artisan Studio, Canoe-Building Studio, and Millshop. A glass garage overhead door has been installed which will connect creators, artisans, and builders to the outdoors while practicing or learning a skill. Several other areas of the Museum are beginning to take shape as well, including a Library, Archive and Research Room, a kitchen adjacent to the Gathering Room, washrooms, and a staff area. 🏗️ Our construction team: Unity Design Studio Inc., Chandos Construction, D.G. Biddle & Associates Limited, Engage Engineering Ltd., Kelson, Lancer Electric, LEA Group. The new museum is made possible, in part, by the generous support of our lead donor and government partners, including the Government of Canada, through the Department of Canadian Heritage (Patrimoine canadien -- Canadian Heritage) and the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario | Agence fédérale de ...), the Weston Family Foundation , City of Peterborough, Peterborough County, and the Province of Ontario (Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, ExploreON | ExplorezON). --- Photo 1: The Atrium. While many plants and animals around us continue to hibernate for the winter, the New Canadian Canoe Museum is full of life! ❄️ On the exterior of the building, Corten steel siding installation, window installation, and the roof are now all complete. Around the property, plants and trees have been planted, pavement is being poured in several areas, and light posts are being installed. At the back of the building, boulders from the current museum have been brought to the site and repurposed for the Campfire Circle, grading for the constructed wetland basin is complete, work on the Upper Terrace continues, and the Canoe House prepares for the move-in of on-the-water equipment, canoes, and kayaks. You may notice the outer walls of the Museum appear to be rusting, but don’t worry! The Corten steel siding will be mostly grey in colour at first but will go through a natural weathering process which will bring the building to its final rust-like colour. Once the weathering process is complete, the rusting will stop and the Corten will become a stable surface. Our soon-to-be neighbour, the Ashburnham Ale House, is a prime example of how our siding will eventually appear! 🏗️ Our construction team: Unity Design Studio Inc., Chandos Construction, D.G.
